Hello from Southwest Michigan
Well 2012 was certainly a year to remember, no matter how hard we try to forget. As you know the spring that started in late winter came back to haunt us in April. Fortunately we were able to have our entire strawberry nursery crop dug and in cold storage long before the early warm weather began. Our new freezer and facilities really helped make this possible.
We irrigated for frost for 15 nights, and I can tell you it was very challenging, but the good news is that we were able to save our fruiting fields and our crop was very good. In spite of the inconvenience of fighting frost at least strawberries are a crop we can save.
Our asparagus fields took some freezes but it too is not a crop where we lose it all because of a couple hard freezes.
We have talked to various growers who want to begin strawberry and asparagus enterprises to help buffer the effects of devastating weather events. For information on what’s involved in setting this up feel free to call or better yet come see us and let us walk you through the process. Our nursery beds were constantly irrigated this summer and our yields look very good and the quality appears excellent. Please order early for dayneutral varieties because again, demand may exceed supply. Again thank you for your past patronage and we look forward to serving you again.
Thanks Again,
Bill Krohne
