Greetings from Southwest Michigan
Hello again. As we prepare for our fall digging and grading season, it seems like we have just gotten finished with one of the longest and coldest winters in recent memory. In Southwest Michigan, we were able to retain an insulating cover of deep snow that helped our fields get through the extreme cold. I am sure some growers found out just how much cold certain fruit varieties can tolerate. Fortunately, strawberries are a crop we can protect with proper mulching.
This season we will offer the Galletta variety of strawberry for the first time. This variety has Earliglow as one of its parents and was developed in North Carolina by Jim Ballington. We should also have a better supply of Rubicon and the four most popular day neutral varieties. Flavorfest may be in short supply again so please order early.
We will be at the Great Lakes Fruit, Vegetable, and Farm Market exposition in Grand Rapids, MI early December. This year I promised my family I’d spend more time in our booth so stop and see us if you can. We are in booth #445.
